NBA 2K21 Defense Tips

Knowing the defense tips is a vital aspect of playing NBA 2K21. Since this not only helps your team score points, it can also prevent the opponent from scoring them, too. Here, we list some tips that you must know to succeed on defense in NBA 2K21.

Defense

Always contest shots

The goal of NBA 2K21 is to put the ball in the basket. Therefore, on defense, you want to work harder on your opponents. Every photo they took wished to be as close as possible. This means being disciplined, don’t try to fly around on the court, jump up when you see a little shot. Otherwise, you will quickly notice that many people are in foul trouble.

You don’t want to start being busy on the court every time, but you want to start thinking about the opportunity to play. You can do this by raising the right stick and placing the player in “hands up the defense.” Or, you can flick right when your opponent is farther away and about to shoot. Using this method will see the most direct positive results in the paint zone because you have fewer jumps, making the paint a less ideal offensive place.

Prevent offensive rebounds

Dominance on the offensive board is one of the most annoying ways to win in 2K.

One of the easiest ways to cause bad rebounds is to block the shot not far from the shooter. When you jump away from the camera, only two things happen, and both are bad. They either succeeded or missed, and their guys can rebound because you are recovering from the jump.

If you have a big man struggling on the board, please don’t be shy to lower more guys to ensure a rebound by clicking right on the d-pad, clicking the left trigger once, and then choosing to crash the glass.

Quickly switch to the last defender

To switch to your last line of defense before your opponent goes for a shot, otherwise, they are highly likely to foul. You can switch defenders by pressing X (PS4) or A (XB1) on the controller. You can even press R1/L1 (PS4) or RB/LB (XB1), a button combination dedicated to switching to the guy closest to the basket.

Square up and strafe for better defense

When it comes time to keep up with your man, hold L2 and watch as your player gets low and squares his shoulder to the ball carrier. You’ll find it easier to control your man as you look to try and match the movements of the ball carrier, and you can even use the right analog stick to put your hands in the way of a shot or into a passing lane to attempt a block, steal, or contested shot. The L2 button will be your best friend on defense.

Get back on the fast break

Speaking of fast breaks, don’t lollygag on the turn of possession. If your teammate misses a shot and you can’t get the rebound, start running down to the other end of the court. And when you make the shot, don’t sit around celebrating when the point guard is about to take the ball right back in the other direction.

Box out on rebounds and free-throws

And speaking of rebounds, make it easier on yourself. The defense will be in a better position to rebound the ball more often than not. When you are, hold L2 to box your guy out, and either pave the way for your players to grab it or go and get it yourself (especially if you’re the center).

Defensive communication

Turning on your defensive communication setting have a lot of value to many 2K gamers. When defensive communication is on, a little indicator will appear above your head assisting you in many things on the defensive side of the ball. From improving your communication with your computer teammates on fast breaks to giving you a heads up when screens are coming.

Manual switch mechanic

Aided by having defensive communications on is utilizing the Manual Switch Mechanic. On a fast break, you can coordinate with your computer defenders to create a better path for defending long passes by switching assignments. Or if you beat on defense or have a mismatch, holding A(XB1) and X(PS4) tells your nearest defender to switch with you to limit the damage.

Go for well-timed steals

Forcing turnovers is an important part of basketball. The classic steal is one of the most exciting defensive plays because of it. Just press Square to put your hand out and go for the ball. Try and only go for the steal against a player who doesn’t have great handling, or while they’re in the act of passing the ball. Even just one or two stolen possessions can be the difference between winning and losing the game.

Don’t leave your man open

NBA 2K21 has visual aides turned on for most difficulty levels. On defense, you’ll see a blue arrow directing you toward the man you’re supposed to pick up. It’s especially important to pay attention to this indicator when you’re playing zone defense, as the man you’re supposed to be guarding changes constantly.

Practise makes perfect

Practise makes perfect! Finding when to use certain defensive moves and how to read your opponent will prove vital down the road.
