The M4 is one of the assault rifles available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, giving players a fully automatic weapon suited to a wide range of Multiplayer fights. During the Open Beta, the M4 unlocked at Player Rank 9, so players could reach it fairly early in the progression track. How to Unlock the M4
During the Open Beta, the M4 was tied directly to Player Progression. Players earned XP through Multiplayer and unlocked new weapons, equipment, and other content as their Player Rank increased. The official Beta progression guide placed the M4 at Player Rank 9 and listed 68 weapon levels for it.
The important distinction is that Player Rank and Weapon Level serve different purposes. Player Rank determines when the M4 becomes available, while Weapon Level progression unlocks additional options for that specific rifle.
M4 unlock steps

- Complete Daily Challenges when they fit your normal matches.
- Reach Player Rank 9 during the Beta to unlock the M4.
- Equip the M4 through Create a Class once it becomes available.
- Test the rifle in the Firing Range before making major changes to the loadout.
- Keep leveling the M4 to access more weapon customization.
The Rank 9 requirement should be treated as the Open Beta requirement. The Beta progression does not become permanent progression for the full game, so players should check the retail progression system after launch rather than assuming the same level requirement will remain unchanged.
Start With a Simple M4 Loadout
The M4 is described by Activision as a fully automatic and highly adaptable assault rifle. That makes it a practical starting point for players who want one primary weapon that can handle changing engagement distances.
You do not need to build an elaborate loadout immediately. Start with the base rifle and use the Firing Range to identify what needs improvement.
A simple testing order
- Fire at close range to check handling.
- Move back and test medium-range recoil.
- Try sustained fire instead of short bursts.
- Check how quickly you can aim and move between targets.
- Change one or two attachments at a time.
If recoil is the main problem, focus on controllability first. If you are comfortable controlling the rifle but struggle while moving, try a setup that places more emphasis on handling and mobility.
This method also makes it easier to create different M4 configurations for different maps instead of relying on one setup for every situation.
Level the M4 for More Customization
Once the M4 is unlocked, its Weapon Level becomes the next progression target. The Beta version had 68 weapon levels, giving players plenty of room to unlock and test Gunsmith options.
Modern Warfare 4 also introduces Apex Attachments, which can significantly change how supported weapons function. The M4’s Apex option is the M4 HURRICANE, a 5.7x28mm conversion that uses a high-capacity, P90-style magazine configuration. It changes the M4 into a much more specialized weapon setup rather than simply adding another minor stat adjustment.
For that reason, it makes sense to keep using the M4 after unlocking it if you want to explore its full progression path.

When the M4 Makes Sense
The M4 fits situations where engagement distances change frequently. A typical Multiplayer map can force you to move between indoor fights, medium-range lanes, and longer sightlines, so a flexible assault rifle can reduce the need to change your entire playstyle between engagements.
Use the M4 when your matches commonly involve:
- Medium-range gunfights.
- Mixed indoor and outdoor areas.
- Frequent movement between cover.
- Sustained automatic fire.
- A balanced approach rather than a highly specialized weapon role.
The rifle can also be useful while learning Modern Warfare 4’s gunplay. Spending time with one consistent weapon helps you learn recoil, target tracking, positioning, and movement without constantly adapting to a different firing pattern.
Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint
The Inner Circuit is a separate M4 Weapon Blueprint available as part of the digital pre-order offer. It does not replace the standard M4 progression system. Instead, it provides a ready-made M4 configuration that can be used at launch.
The Blueprint comes with five attachments and is built around accuracy, handling, and mobility. Its configuration favors close- and medium-range engagements while giving up some effectiveness at longer distances.

The Blueprint uses the same weapon build across supported platforms. Xbox Series X|S receives the translucent OG Green visual treatment, while other supported platforms use the mil-spec appearance. The visual difference does not change the weapon’s gameplay characteristics.
Practice Before Taking the M4 Into Regular Matches
If you are still learning the rifle, spend a few minutes testing the same setup repeatedly rather than rebuilding it after every match. A controlled bot-filled practice setup can help with basic target tracking, recoil control, and movement, but it should be treated as practice rather than an official M4 progression method.
Once the rifle feels consistent, take the same configuration into standard Multiplayer and see which engagements are actually causing problems. If you are losing fights because opponents are creating distance, adjust the build toward range and recoil control. If most deaths happen while pushing buildings or moving between cover, a more mobile configuration may fit better.
What to Do With the M4 at Launch
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to release on October 23, 2026. Since the Open Beta progression resets, the first step after launch is to check the live Player Progression system and confirm the M4’s current unlock requirement rather than relying on the Beta’s Rank 9 placement.
After unlocking it, use the Firing Range to establish a basic build, then level the weapon through regular Multiplayer. Players who want to spend extra time practicing can use a CoD MW4 Bot Lobby setup for weapon handling drills, but the main progression path should remain the game’s standard Player and Weapon Level systems.
Once the basic M4 configuration feels comfortable, continue leveling the rifle and test its available Gunsmith options. If you want a more specialized close- and medium-range setup, continue progressing toward the M4 HURRICANE and compare it with the standard M4 before deciding which configuration fits your normal Multiplayer playstyle.
